The Okavango Delta - Truly the largest inland Delta in the world!
Described as "the river which never finds the sea", the Okavango River in northwestern Botswana disappears into a 6,000-square-mile maze of lagoons, channels, and islands. The Okavango Delta is a spectacular site either in flood or at other times of the year. Teeming with wildlife and over 400 bird species, a visit to Botswana's Delta is an experience of a lifetime.
The Okavango Delta in Botswana is the largest inland Delta in the world. It's made up of an intricate network of channels and lagoons, and one of Africa’s vast unspoilt and pristine wilderness areas teeming with wildlife. The Okavango Delta is fascinating. In a country which is 80% arid, the Delta is a permanent life giving waterway. An essential understanding when planning your Okavango Safari is that it is a highly dynamic environment, which changes from year to year and even from month to month.
Rising in the Angolan Highlands, the Okavango River enters Botswana below Namibia's Caprivi region. Here, in the so called 'pan-handle,' it is still a wide, fairly swift, flowing river, but due to the overwhelmingly flat landscape and a series of geological faults, it soon starts to meander forming graffiti-like bends that wind sinuously through dense beds of Papyrus. Below the pan-handle, the Okavango River splits into three main channels, each one carrying water in a different direction. The headwaters of each of these channels are situated in the permanent swamp (water based camps), but further along their course, each penetrates into what is known as the 'seasonal swamp' (land and combination camps). Life in the Delta ecosystem is governed by two events: The summer rains and the winter floods. Summer rainfall fills seasonal pans and helps keep the channels full, but towards the end of summer the waters recede, only to rise again when the floodwaters from the Angolan Highlands eventually reach the lower delta. The Okavango Delta fluctuates in size according to a complex relationship between the annual flood from Angola and local rainfall. Not all the 13 000km² is flooded and at the driest time of the year, perennial flood plains amount to only 6 000km².
The Moremi Game Reserve
Moremi Game Reserve is the only section of the Okavango Delta that has been cordoned off for wildlife. The Moremi Game reserve is safari country par excellence and rivals even Chobe. Lying on the central and eastern side of the Delta, Moremi is a mix of both aquatic and terrestrial landscapes, the latter of which is comprised of savannas and riparian woodland. The Okavango Delta supports the most diverse habitat and animal populations in Botswana, with possible sightings of wild dog, cheetah, leopard and much more! Resident species include lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, giraffe, hyena, zebra, kudu, lechwe, sable and roan antelope. Stay in comfort and style at one of the many Camps and Lodges in the Okavango. Reminisce fireside about your day's game viewing by mokoro (dug out canoe), boat or Land Rover. Wake to the loud grumbling of an elephant's tummy and lie silent and still in your luxury tent while it grazes only a stone's throw away. Experience a sunset unlike any other, as the sun dips on another day on safari in the Okavango Delta. The Delta is home to some of the most exclusive luxury camps in Botswana - and all of Africa for that matter!
The Serengeti
The Serengeti is Africa's most famous park. Renowned for the two million strong wildebeest 'Great Migration' and incredible concentrations of predators, the Serengeti is a park that guarantees an exceptional safari. The vast endless grass plains (Serenget in Maasai) are the richest grazing grounds on the continent; home to the largest herds on the planet, and the highest concentrations of predators in Africa.
Just focusing on the Great Migration however would not be doing the park justice for it is widely believed that if you took the Great Migration out of the park, the Serengeti is still the finest park in Africa. Herewith a video by Singita Grumeti Reserve, about their lodges etc, but an absolute fantastic depiction of the Serengeti at the same time!
There is no real beginning or end to a wildebeest's journey. Its life is an endless pilgrimage!
From the vast Serengeti plains to the champagne colored hills of Kenya's Masai Mara over 1.4 million wildebeest and 200,000 zebra and gazelle, relentlessly tracked by Africa's great predators, migrate in a clockwise fashion over 1,800 miles each year in search of rain ripened grass.
There is no real beginning or end to a wildebeest's journey. Its life is an endless pilgrimage, a constant search for food and water. The only beginning is at the moment of birth. An estimated 400,000 wildebeest calves are born during a six week period early each year - usually between late January and mid-March.
DECEMBER, JANUARY, FEBRUARY, MARCH
The Serengeti National Park / Ngorongoro Conservation Area is arguably the most impressive wildlife sanctuary in the world. During the months December through March the seemingly unending plains of the southern Serengeti and the Conservation Area are inhabited by enormous herds of wildebeest and zebra. The great herds graze on rain ripened grass.
In the calving season (late January through mid March) the herds concentrate at the Ndutu and Salei plains (Southern Serengeti / Ngorongoro Conservation Area) attracting the attention of predators like lion, cheetah and hyena.
During this period the migration is best observed from Ndutu Safari Lodge, Kusini Camp or any of several private tented camps used by mobile safaris such as our "Wildlife Adventure by 4x4 Safari". These include campsites in the Ndutu / Naabi area.
APRIL, MAY
During the months April and May the depleted plains are unable to sustain the endless herds. The migration, sweeping west and north, moves from the short grass plains of the southern Serengeti / Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the long grass plains and woodland of the Serengeti's western Corridor, almost to Lake Victoria. This period is during the long rains and is considered off season for wildlife viewing in East Africa as roads are often impassable. Ndutu Safari Lodge, Kusini Camp and the Serengeti Serena Lodge are fine for wildlife viewing during this time. So are campsites in the Ndutu / Naabi area.
JUNE
By the end of May the wildebeest have exhausted the Western Corridor's best pastures and the herds must move further north. Entering the Lamai Wedge and the Mara Triangle, breeding occurs May through June. This is a transitional period between the rains and the dry season. Grumeti River Camp, Migration Camp and Kirawira Camp are also options. Seronera and Moru area campsites are best.
JULY, AUGUST, SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER
By July the countless herds have amassed along the swollen Mara River - a final barrier from the short sweet grasses of the Masai Mara. Sometimes the crossing place they have chosen is shallow allowing the majority of animals to pass safely. In other areas the waters boil with drowning wildebeest and slashing crocodiles.
Between July and October the wildebeest reside in the Mara. We recommend Governor's Il Moran Tented Camp as the leading safari camp in the Masai Mara. Other tented camps include Governor's Main Camp, Little Governor's Camp and Bateleur Camp. Tanzanian lodges recommended during this time include Kirawira Tented, Migration Camp, and Grumeti River Camp. Kirawira and Moru area campsites are best.
NOVEMBER
The arrival of the short rains call the migration southward. During the short rains of November the wildebeest migration is best viewed from either Lobo Wildlife Lodge or Klein's Camp. Campsites in the Lobo area are best.
As November ends the migration is making its way back to the southern Serengeti and early in the year they once again give birth. The circle of life is complete.
Note - The migration is a natural event and the timing varies month by month; year by year, further determined by rainfall patterns…
