Sanctuary Olonana Camp (Masai Mara) Kenya
Location:
Sanctuary Olonana is an award-winning tented camp on a private stretch of the Mara River, at the foot of the impressive Siria Escarpment close to where the famous last scene from "Out of Africa" was filmed.
Located close to the border with Tanzania, the game concentration is high - and during the annual wildebeest migration, the action happens right on the camp's doorstep.
Accommodation:
This small and exclusive camp, the first of Sanctuary's luxury safari properties, was built along sustainable lines which, along with our innovative wetlands and tree-planting projects, have earned Sanctuary Olonana a silver award from Ecotourism Kenya.
The Masai Mara is fabulous for seeing big cats, their prey and all the Big Five. It is also the stage for the greatest show on Earth - the wildebeest migration. From around July to October grunting herds of wildebeest and zebra cover the plains, often crossing the river between Tanzania and Kenya, attended by crocodile, lion and cheetah. Sanctuary Olonana's main dining room and veranda command views over a dramatic stretch of the Mara River. See, and hear, the family of noisy hippos who colonies the banks below the camp. Experience first hand the sheer scale of the annual wildebeest migration across East Africa. The camp has a library, a pool and even an organic garden where much of the food served in camp is grown. And who could forget the mini-spa where guests can experience traditional African remedies alongside French marine therapies from Thalgo.
The fourteen canvas tents at Sanctuary Olonana are extremely comfortable and spacious. All have parquet floors, four-poster beds and private verandas overlooking the river. From your decking you will be able to enjoy a quiet evening drink, whilst watching the hippo frolicking just before heading out for their nightly grazing.
Facilities and Activities:
The cuisine at Olonana is sure to delight you. Meals can either be served al fresco perched on the Siria escarpment overlooking the Mara plains or as a picnic at a well chosen spot deep in the bush. If you fancy a quiet moment to look up the days sightings then there is a very comfortable library to entertain you.
You are entirely at your own pace at Olonana. Meals, and activities unfold around you at suitable times and are not scheduled with the exception of game drives that are set at times during the day most comfortable to guests and also at a time of day likely to catch most game out from the shade. Olonana enjoys a peaceful elegance that pervades through it’s personalized service and expert management team who will ensure you take home some unforgettable experiences of Kenya. The famous images of wildebeest swimming over the river, chased by crocodile, are well known. When you are at Olonana Camp during the river crossing, this is exactly what you see, from the comfort of the lodge veranda. Five star Olonana Camp has one of the best locations in the Masai Mara.
Morning and afternoon game drives expose you to the excellent game viewing and if you want to see the sheer size of the migration then fly high above the plains in a hot air balloon! The large tented rooms are more like chalets with canvas walls that can be raised, giving you maximum views of the game. Each room is decadently furnished with four poster beds and private verandas. Relax in the camp library, in the pool or sit on the main outlook deck with views of the Mara River.
Olonana is involved with the eco-Tourism of the area with solar power, a tree planting project, a wetlands project and the camp assists the local community in various projects. Guests at Olonana can participate in a reforestation of the Mara project by making a donation to plant a tree, to offset the natural resources used during their stay. The camp received a Silver award from the Eco-Tourism Society of Kenya and has projects to assist the local community. Olonana has been named one of the top 15 safari camps in the world by Conde Nast Traveller.
