Mchenja Bush Camp (South Luangwa National Park) Zambia
Location:
Mchenja, meaning "ebony", occupies a stunning setting beneath a magnificent grove of these trees on the banks of the Luangwa River. It is just a short morning's walk upstream from Kakuli Bush Camp and is in an area teaming with wildlife. Although this camp takes luxury in the bush to a level not previously seen in Zambia, it is a bush camp designed to combine excellently with our other more rustic locations.
As a luxury bush camp, Mchenja is the perfect destination to complete a walking safari that has combined stays at a number of our camps. Alternatively, those guests seeking a little more comfort and pampering may choose to combine a longer stay here, with a number of nights at the main lodge.
The camp takes luxury in the bush to a level not previously seen in Zambia.
Accommodation:
Mchenja consists of five stylishly designed and spacious tents on raised platforms under thatch, with a deck in front overlooking the Luangwa River. Each tent has an inside bath with an outside shower room.
The tents are octagonally shaped, with a claw-foot bath in the dressing area and each has an open-air bathroom. Set far enough apart for privacy, the tents have mosquito screen windows, with curtains which can be pulled across, and wrought iron storage. Three of the tents are on one side of the main area, and two are on the other side.
Activities & Facilities:
The beautiful central chitenje (lounge) is built around one of the old fallen Mchenja (ebony) trees and guests can cool off there in the camp’s plunge pool. Brunch is taken in the shady lounge but dinner is more often served on the river bank under the stars. There is also a small plunge pool for guests to cool off during the heat of the day.
Guests and be assured of best rates at Mchenja can choose whether they want to view their wildlife on foot or from an open gameviewing vehicle. In addition to the ebony grove at camp there are two other stunning groves close by, as is the case with Kakuli, the gameviewing in this area is superb and night drives are usually very worthwhile. Mchenja is the perfect destination to complete a walking or driving safari that has combined stays at a number of our bush camps. Alternatively, those guests seeking a little more comfort and pampering may choose to combine a longer stay here, with a number of nights at Chinzombo, our new ultra luxury camp on the banks of the Luangwa River.
