Amakhosi Safari Lodge (Northern Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal) South Africa
Location:
Amakhosi Safari Lodge is ideally situated in the heart of Northern Zululand, in KwaZulu-Natal. Amakhosi means 'Place of Kings' and bears testimony to its dramatic surroundings, offering attentive service and opulent luxury fit for royalty.
The lodge is easily accessible by way of air charter or road. It is a 4.5 hour drive from Johannesburg and 3.5 hours from Durban, making Amakhosi Lodge a central point that is also uniquely situated within 2.5 hours from St Lucia, Sodwana, Richard's Bay and Swaziland.
Accommodation:
The thatched accommodation is particularly spacious: the six air-conditioned River Suites are well spaced and offer great seclusion and comfort ceiling-high windows and an expansive deck overlooking the river. There's a bedroom, separate sitting room, bathroom, separate shower room and loo. T
he suites at AmaKhosi Safari Lodge are decorated in colorful African fabrics but it is the glass walls onto the bush, and the decadent bathrooms, with a bath for two surrounded by candles which attracted me. The sitting room can be converted into a children's bedroom as it has a sofa bed. The two Umntwana suites are perfect for honeymooners with an open plan design, glass walls, spacious deck with private Jacuzzi and a bedroom and sitting room.
The newest addition to AmaKhosi Safari Lodge is the
IsiGodlo Private Villa - perfect for families or friends -
with two en suite bedrooms, spacious lounge with large
leather sofas, fireplace all opening onto the deck with
sweeping views of the valley and wildlife below. The plunge
pool is perfect for the warm KwaZulu days.
Facilities:
Executive meetings blend in well with the philosophies and tranquil surroundings of AmaKhosi. Accommodating a maximum of 30 pax in a private function room, a fully inclusive package includes meals and two safaris daily, sundowner cocktails in the bush, as well as all local alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages.
Recently completed is the added feature of a traditional Zulu Kraal, proudly built by AmaKhosi staff along with the help from the local Zulu community. Guests at the lodge are now able to enjoy a cozy evening away from the main lodge around an African bonfire, followed by traditional South African braai under the stars.
AmaKhosi Lodge offers a high level of service and luxury, which accompanies the dramatic surroundings bearing testimony to its name. A special place where royal treatment is a part of each day and no two days are the same, making every visit more special than the last! Guests can expect luxurious accommodation, outstanding cuisine, and magnificent game viewing, culminating in a mesmerizing splendor of African charm in their own “private kingdom”.
The main lodge at AmaKhosi Safari Lodge is equally expansive, with two sitting areas, bar, indoor dining area, covered terrace for evening dining and an expansive deck for breakfast and lunch with open views of the Mkuze River. A qualified masseuse at Amakhosi offers a range of treatments in the privacy of your suite.
Swimming pool with poolside loungers - library - curio shop corner - dining room - bar - inside & outside lounge - satellite television - conference facilities for 16 delegates - central communication center (email, phone & fax) also available at additional cost
Children at Amakhosi:
Children are welcome at Amakhosi Safari Lodge either in the Isigodlo Villa or in the spacious River suites which are well-designed for families with a lounge with a sleeper couch, separate toilet, shower room and main bathroom with another loo.
Cots can also be supplied. Amakhosi doesn't recommend the adult drive for children under 7 years. AmaKhosi Safari Lodge offer baby sitting facilities and a 'kiddies drive' outside of scheduled game drive times, which is shorter, and specifically designed for little ones to enjoy and be entertained.
Activities:
The AmaZulu game reserve is over 12,000ha in size and offers the Big Five - elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo. The several different co-systems of the reserve - mountain grasslands, wetlands and valley bushveld - leads to a diversity of animals including giraffe, warthog, hyena, hippo and 15 different antelope species.
Early morning and afternoon game drives and bush walks introduce you to the fascinating world of animal inter-dependence and hierarchy. AmaKhosi Safari Lodge has also become famous for its unique frogging safaris which take place after dark from November to March. The wetlands area of AmaZulu in particular, offers spectacular birding with over 400 recorded species.
