Kapama River Lodge (Kapama Private Game Reserve) South Africa

Location:

Kapama Private Game Reserve, with its portfolio of luxurious safari lodges, occupies a vast area between the northern Drakensberg mountains and the Greater Kruger National Park and is the largest single-owned game reserve in the region.

The adjacent Eastgate airport (Hoedspruit) is perfectly situated to receive guests flying in from either Johannesburg or Cape Town, and Kapama includes free transfers in open safari vehicles directly to any of our four lodges on Kapama namely River Lodge, Buffalo Camp, Karula and Southern Camp. These camps and lodges can accommodate a total number of 222 guests.

South Africa's Limpopo province in which Kapama is situated is renowned for its wildlife and includes areas such as the well known Kruger National Park. Our reserve with its 13000 hectares of pristine wilderness shares a large number of biomes with the Kruger Park and therefore are able to host all animals including the Big 5: Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Buffalo and Rhinoceros, to name but a few of the approximately 42 different mammal species calling Kapama home.

Approximately 350 bird species and a myriad of smaller species can also be seen in their natural environment. Game drives are conducted twice daily with expert guides and trackers who will eagerly share their bush experiences and knowledge with you whilst driving through some of the most beautiful savannah woodlands, grassland and riverine bush which makes up the Kapama Game Reserve.

Description:

Kapama River Lodge is a luxury safari lodge situated within the Kapama Game Reserve, and presents the perfect blend between luxurious safari accommodation and a very generous bed capacity of 64 bedrooms. The northern Drakensberg mountain range provides a majestic backdrop to this, the largest lodge in the Greater Kruger National Park region. Although large, it is stylishly furnished and beautifully positioned along a dry riverbed. The ambience of nature is captured perfectly and guests fall in love with River Lodge the moment they arrive.

Each spacious room at Kapama River Lodge features a full en-suite bathroom and patio with uninterrupted views into the leafy-green game reserve. The central guest entertainment areas include a large rim-flow swimming pool with sun umbrellas and recliners for those lazy afternoons. The long L-shaped lounge and bar under a double-volume thatch, curves around the pool and on either side is a huge double-sided fireplace creating a wondrous open-plan yet cozy atmosphere.

The Rhino Boma dining area with tables tastefully arranged under a low thatch in a horseshoe shape has a central open area where a roaring fire gives a brilliant glow to evening meals. Buffet-style meals introduce Pan African flavors and dishes using fresh local ingredients and specialty dishes featuring venison like Kudu and Impala.

Kapama River Lodge is so named because it lies in a bend of the Kapama River, which is usually dry, but can from time to time flood with the water reaching the steps of the lodge swimming pool. A small permanent waterhole lies just beyond the River Lodge perimeter attracting animals like antelopes, Elephant and Buffalo. Watch this truly African spectacle from the balmy blue water of the rim flow swimming pool, or just relax in the shade of an umbrella on loungers around the pool with a delicious cocktail waiting for you a mere couple of meters away.

For those occasions when you need to catch up on world news on cable TV, watch a sports game or entertain the children with a wildlife DVD, head down to the River Lodge Media Room. This area can also be easily converted into a small and intimate conference facility seating 20 delegates or less with an overhead projector and audio system. Right next door is a guest internet facility to re-connect with family and friends.

Lounge

African pots, stools and artifacts grace the illuminated recessed alcoves in the lounges and bar of Kapama River lodge. Chairs are softly upholstered in reds and golds and the high yellow thatch reflects a warm light back into the beamed lounges. A wide chimney divides each lounge area, and the dual-facing fireplaces throws light and warmth into all areas.

Wooden-framed glass concertina doors and modern blinds can be pulled closed to keep it cozy on those chilly winter evenings or opened up completely for views beyond the rim-flow pool into the sandy riverbed. A special feature of River Lodge is the straw clad walls, helping to seamlessly merge the inside with the outside and making you feel one with nature.

Dining

Kapama River Lodge extends itself with three different dining venues:

The Rhino Boma is the most popular buffet dinner venue where a delicious variety of dishes are enjoyed under an open-sided thatch, around a crackling fire.

The Riverbed is a romantic place to dine, with a star-studded African night sky above you and the sand of the dry riverbed beneath you.

Siyatla Lounge is purposely built and perfect for larger groups, formal functions, product launches and conferences. It has its own bar and lounge with two large fireplaces and chimneys extending up through the thatched roof. Massive Leadwood trunks create a truly African feature within the centre and concertina glass panel doors open the space completely to let in all the sounds and smells of Africa.

Dishes are prepared with seasonal local produce and fresh herbs grown at Kapama River Lodge. Ethnic dishes and accompaniments like mealy pap (African-style polenta) and chakalaka (a hot and spicy relish) are used to give the taste of Africa, but more familiar food is also on the menu. Safari game drives have the habit of giving you a raging appetite so forget the diet and indulge into specialist dishes like Warthog stew and Kudu casserole, Impala sausages or mild oxtail curries. Vegetarians, vegans and all other dietary types are well catered for with only the best quality ingredients and fresh produce.

Wine Cellar

Kapama River lodge boasts a magnificent wine cellar where we stock only the best South African wines in a perfectly humidified environment.

big plate glass windows allow you to look into the cellar which houses more than 600 bottles of fine wine. Apart from some French Champagne, all the wines and Cap Classique's sparkling are from South Africa's finest Cape vineyards.

Suites

Kapama River Lodge features 40 spacious air-conditioned suites, with modern yet distinctly African furnishings and log-beam ceilings. Step onto your private balcony with a cool drink from your mini bar, and while away free time, gazing lazily into the bush for animals that may pass by, or have your early morning coffee in your room, watching the bush come alive with sound as the first rays fall.

Bathrooms are all en-suite with his and hers basins, bath and shower and complimentary amenities which are replenished daily.

Spa Suites

The 20 Spa suites, completed in November 2008, are positioned close to the Spa on a private setting away from the rest of the lodge, and all rooms have magnificent views into the reserve from your balcony. The earthy colors and the use of frameless glass panels in the bathroom as well as the high doors make it possible to fully enjoy the splendid views from virtually every corner of the room. The room includes all other luxuries such as a minibar and coffee and tea making facilities, hair dryer, safe box and also a built in international plug that can accommodate most electric power plug configurations.

The Family Rooms is situated with the Spa suites and includes three balconies and separate areas with two beds for younger children should guests want their children to be accommodated in the same room. This room is in excess of 70 m² including the balconies and is also ideal for guests who just enjoy the comfort a larger room offers.

Royal Suites

Pamper yourself in one of the two River Lodge Royal Suites. These suites are bigger in every way and have a separate lounge and extended balcony with recliner couches.

Your en-suite bathroom has a bath and a dual shower cubicle looking towards the bush. Magnificent views into the reserve are possible from two sides, and as always also the opportunity to spot that rare animal passing in close proximity.
