Flatdogs Camp (South Luangwa National Park) Zambia

Flatdogs Camp (South Luangwa National Park) Zambia - www.africansafaris.travelLocation:

The South Luangwa National Park is one of the great wildlife wonders of the world. It is nine thousand square kilometers (3,475 square miles) of pristine wilderness in Zambia’s Eastern Province. The South Luangwa has been visited by wildlife enthusiasts from all over the world since its creation as a National Park in 1972. The Luangwa offers a safari experience unmatched by any other destination, allowing year round access, open game viewing vehicles, walking safaris and night game drives. However, due to the remoteness of the Park and the difficulties of operating so far from anywhere, the cost of a safari has been prohibitive to many people. In May 2000 Flatdogs Camp opened and the Luangwa Valley and all of its magic is now open to everyone! Our safari guides are of the highest standard, having passed the challenging South Luangwa Guide Exam, and they are ready to show you the incredible diversity of mammals, both large and small, as well as our trees, birds, insects, tracks, spoor and even fish if you ask them to!! Jess has fifteen years of tour operating experience and is more than happy to help you put together an itinerary that won’t cost you an arm and a leg and will be more fun than you can shake a stick at! Flatdogs Camp is designed for kids of all ages and the only thing we take seriously is your enjoyment…

Relaxed Hippo - Flatdogs Camp (South Luangwa National Park) Zambia - www.africansafaris.travelThe Flatdogs Philosophy:

After so long in tourism in the Luangwa we know that we need to look after the hospitality needs of several different types of traveler. In the last ten years we have built up a loyal following of international fly–in guests who feel that our accommodation and way of doing things (not to mention price!), suits them better than possibly better known ‘luxury’ lodges. Our guests can take their meals when they would like them, they don’t have to eat dinner with a group of strangers, if they’d prefer to talk to their partner or family in their native language, and NO gold taps! We also understand that we’re all really the ‘visitors’ here so our camp is kept as natural as possible. As a result, large numbers of game find themselves quite at home wandering through camp. The riverfront has not been developed in an effort to minimize disturbance to the ecology, but visitors remain free to sit quietly under shady trees along the riverbank and watch the game in the National Park just across the water. Safari activities are taken in the same game-viewing areas as other lodges in the Luangwa, and although we are not actually inside the park we are as close as it’s possible to be to it! We have decided that we would prefer more people to be able to experience the magic of the Luangwa Valley, so we keep our prices lower and attract a better class of person to enjoy our Safaris!

Chalet interior - Flatdogs Camp (South Luangwa National Park) Zambia -

We have made Flatdogs the only truly ‘family friendly’ camp in the Luangwa. This means we have a pool, plenty of space for children and a children’s menu in the restaurant at children’s chow times. Children are not merely tolerated at Flatdogs….. we actually like having them! A nanny/watchman service is also available for when it’s grown ups’ playtime. /p>

For those who enjoy the more sociable aspects of life in the bush, the restaurant offers an á la carte menu of excellent food, while ice-cold beers and a tempting range of cocktails are available at the bar. We also have an Internet café, book swap and a curio shop supporting local artists & artisans. There is a swimming pool to be dipped into when reading becomes too tiring… We offer a little piece of true Africa with a few of the trimmings of the modern world! But don’t panic – we are blessed with lots of room so you can choose to sit by the river and listen to the hippos honking and real birds twittering if you prefer. Flatdogs is all about the freedom of choice!

Romanctic Room at Flatdogs Camp (South Luangwa National Park) Zambia - www.africansafaris.travelJackalberry Tree House

The Jackal-Berry tree house is built around three live African ebony trees (Diospyros mespiliformis) with unspoilt views out across the a dambo and lagoon system which is regularly visited by elephant and giraffe. The tree house has three main decks which are around six feet off the ground with wooden stairways to reach the spacious sitting area and open-plan bedrooms. Each bedroom has open air en suite bathroom facilities, with hot shower, WC and basin. One bedroom has a queen-sized bed, the other bedroom has either two single beds or these can be converted to a king-sized bed if there are two couples sharing the house. A comfy sofa, easy chairs and floor cushions on the middle deck are ideal for watching the game wandering past the house, oblivious to your presence. A fridge and bar are provided in the tree house as well as tea- and coffee-making facilities. If honeymoon couples and romantic souls fancy a candlelit dinner for two, alone under the stars, we are happy to oblige. Guests at the tree house are provided with a hand-held radio, as the secluded nature of the house means that a vehicle is needed after dark and when elephant are feeding close by. The tree house is also on mains electricity and has 3-pin square plug sockets for recharging cameras and batteries.

Flatdogs Camp (South Luangwa National Park) Zambia - www.africansafaris.travelLuxury En Suite Safari Tent

On the banks of the Luangwa with the best views in camp, we have sited our six luxury en suite safari tents. These tents are spacious enough for full-sized beds, hanging rack for clothes, and bedside tables and lamps, and a door leads into a shaded open-air bathroom with hot shower, flush toilet and basin. The luxury tents also have mosquito nets and electric fans as well as fully-gauzed windows.

Standard En Suite Safari Tent

Slightly smaller and with bush views and settings, the standard en suite safari tents offer a cheaper option but still have all the necessary comforts! One tent looks over a lagoon where elephants, giraffe, hippo, puku and bushbuck regularly visit, two look onto the river, and two have secluded bush settings where you can witness animals going about their daily business. All have full sized beds, hanging rack for clothes and an open air bathroom with hot shower, flush toilet and basin. The standard tents have fully-gauzed windows but no mosquito nets. Mains electricity and plug sockets are found in all the safari tents.

Quiet place to relax, catch up on world news or sports. The gift shop also has a range of Flatdogs clothing, curios, local crafts, reference books and some essential toiletries.

Swimming Pool

To discourage guests from joining the crocodiles in the river in the heat of the day! Night swimming is dependent on which large mammals may be using the pool as a watering hole.

Communications and Internet Café

Flatdogs is connected to the outside world by radio phone and cell phone. Our contact numbers are +260 (0)216 246038 and +260 (0)977 485873.

For checking emails and other Internet access, you can use our computers in the internet cafe but you can’t connect your own computer unfortunately, and there’s no wi-fi. Open from 7.30am to 9.30pm. We are also able to copy your photos onto disc to save space on your memory cards for $5 per CD.

We have a fairly comprehensive workshop and trained mechanics to reassemble your car after the drive in from Chipata. If the job is too big for Flatdogs we will endeavor to help you find a solution.

Camp Visitors - Flatdogs Camp (South Luangwa National Park) Zambia - www.africansafaris.travelWhat We Ask

Although Flatdogs is recognized as a self contained empire, we have adopted the Constitution of Zambia as our rule book. Anyone found breaking the laws of Zambia will be expelled from Flatdogs! Any guest who flouts the guidelines for safety and behavior within Flatdogs will also be shown the door, as will anyone who has been found breaking the National Park Laws whilst inside the Park. Our purpose is to provide you with a safe and enjoyable environment from which to experience the African Bush at close quarters. Those who feel they know how to handle this without our help and expertise are invited to book elsewhere and suffer the consequences. The use of illegal drugs anywhere on the property is forbidden. Any firearms are to be unloaded and left in the care of the management. All pets must be kept on a leash at all times. Management accepts no responsibility for clients’ pets becoming part of the food chain or unwittingly acting as a bait or lure. Now that cell phone reception has arrived in the Luangwa (of all places!), we request that guests take a 4 hour break from the modern world whilst in the bush and do not take mobile phones on any game-viewing activity. Besides being desperately annoying to other guests, who knows how your ring tone will affect that elephant peaceably feeding right next to the vehicle?

Game Drive - Flatdogs Camp (South Luangwa National Park) Zambia - www.africansafaris.travelActivities:
Flatdogs Camp is the closest camp to the Mfuwe main gate, which provides access to the South Luangwa National Park. Flatdogs conducts professionally-guided game viewing activities in the National Park, including morning and night drives and walking safaris. (Walking possible during the dry season.) Each drive or walk is accompanied by a fully-qualified guide, and for the drives a fully-equipped 4×4 Toyota Land Cruiser with radio so they are in contact with Flatdogs in case of emergency. All our guides carry toolboxes, and a first aid kit. Most of our vehicles can carry nine guests but we limit numbers to six per vehicle unless larger groups or families prefer to go out together. Our morning drives leave camp at 0600 hours and last for at least four hours. Night drives depart at 1600 hours and return at around 2015 hours when the National Park is closed to all vehicles. Private vehicles may enter the Park from 0600-1800 hours daily.

Stunning sunset at Flatdogs Camp (South Luangwa National Park) Zambia -

Between 1st June and 31st October each year (and for a few weeks either side, depending on rainfall) we are able to offer walking safaris. These are a fascinating, more personal view of the park and its wildlife. Walks usually last four hours and are commonly taken in the morning when it’s cooler. We also offer a drive/walk combination of a 2-hour walk and a 2-hour drive. /p>

Other combinations are available, and this year in the winter months all-day drives with some walking and taking a picnic lunch with you into the park proved to be very popular. Please chat to us when you get here if you are interested as these can be organized with a day’s notice (for a minimum of 4 guests).

We also offer nature walks in the area around Flatdogs Camp, particularly for children who cannot join a full walk inside the park, but who are keen to learn more about the dung and tracks and signs found in and around camp.
